Saturday, December 24, 2022: Today I pulled the Seven of Wands, the Chariot expressed in the element of fire. Often I refer to this as the “Hell No” card. It’s an expression of valor and is a warrior card. Today dealing with the reality of post Covid setting in I don’t feel like much of a warrior. At least for now I’m going to have to honor how I feel and set healthy boundaries and expectations. I’m invoking the Feelings oracle card as a reminder to listen to how I feel and to what my body is telling me. Today that might involve saying Hell No.

Thursday, December 22, 2022: Today I again pulled The Lovers. Thinking of the lovers I thought of how in our culture we are told that lovers and couples are the same thing. We are told that the nuclear family defines normality and that friendship is a distant secondary to romantic relationships. That doen't work for many people. Now some people are starting to define relationships differently. Some are finding community in their multiple romantic relationships and others are adopting a view that all relationships are sacred no matter how they are expressed. We human apes more often than not need community. It really does take a village. With that in mind I am invoking The Forest and am embracing my loves of all kinds for they are my family.

Tuesday, December 20, 2022: Today I pulled the Devil. I don’t believe we can stop ourselves from loving the way we love. Trying to stop ourselves from feeling what we feel, in my opinion, is pretty much futile. This applies to more than than love and sex. To paraphrase the German philosopher Arthur Schopenhauer, A person can do what they will, but cannot will what they will. In other words, you can choose to do what you want, but your wants are chosen for you. Your free will is constrained. The Wiccan Rede is, “An ye harm none, do what ye will.” To me, this is all about consent and accountability. We are responsible and accountable for our actions. I believe a happier life comes from being in alignment with our wants and actions within a framework of consent and accountability. Therefore I am invoking The Carnal servitor card.

Sunday, December 18, 2022: On this day I pulled The Lovers. Recently I read a poem called The Parallel Universe by Sophie Lucido Johnson where she writes about a concept of family where the people who love each other, who are logical family, are like trees with intertwined roots like tangled spaghetti where we are all each other's strength connected physically and metaphysically with tendrils of love and support. It's with this notion of The Lover's that I invoke “Roots” thinking of my loves (of all kinds) as a part of me and of I as a part of them as we are all growing together in this garden we call life.

In my opinion the journey of the sevens, eights and leading into the nines reflect the fool’s journeys through this part of the major arcana. It’s a journey of alignment of the journey of the spirit, the intellect and our nature as animals, as apes. The eights I call shape shifters in this case in the element of fire. Wednesday, December 7, 2022: And, again today I pulled the Lovers. The other day I compared this card to the Two of Cups. Both are strong cards of choice but, in my opinion, the Lovers (and all the sixes) focus more on passion and relationship and ongoing engagement than the twos, which really are cards of choice The sixes are cards of connection, entanglement and obligation. With that in mind I am invoking Conscious Connections.

Tuesday, December 6, 2022: This morning I pulled The Queen of Wands. For me this card is fire itself. She is dominant. She is passion. She is sex and she is beyond sex. She may not be throwing the bricks but she’s at the bullhorn screaming, “hey hey - ho ho - the patriarchy has got to go!” Passion and pleasure are political and this queen is on a mission. I’m invoking Revolution because something seriously has to change.

Monday, December 5, 2022: This morning I pulled the Nine of Wands. For me the nines all call back to the Hermit, the nine card of the Major Arcana. They are all about personal qualities and this nine is about resilience. This nine is facing adversity and is called to persevere. This appears to be a tactical situation yet I am choosing to invoke Suspension, a form of the Hanged Man. This is a card of strategy. There’s a pause in the action in the Nines of the minor arcana that invite the protagonist (the Fool) to contemplate their next action. This is an opportunity to strategize and I am saying, take it! Look at the situation from all angles and consider the possibilities. Then, respond rather than react.

The chief difference is the sense of entanglement that comes from the Lovers while I see the 2s as being all about conscious choice. That choice is there with the Lovers for sure. Sunday, November 20, 2022: I pulled the Hierophant today. Perhaps my least favorite card. This card represents orthodoxy to me, classically it is the Pope. The clash between orthodoxy and reality is played out in all the fives: poverty, grief, deceit and chaos. The Hierophant brings shame and pain. This can be a powerful teacher though. There are things that we should be ashamed of. Knowing what those things really are — there’s the lesson.

The Tender Touch

Saturday, November 19, 2022: “Don’t confuse the map with the territory,” that’s a term a teacher of mine used a lot. Today I pulled the lovers, again. The term lover is a label. For me labels are maps. When someone says another person is a lover what does that mean, really? What’s the sorting hat? Sex? Does that mean mean asexuals can’t be lovers, perhaps partners even? Years ago I had a conversation with my friend Bess about a woman who was then in my life named Kathy. I referred to my relationship with Kathy. Bess said, “I didn’t know you were in a relationship with Kathy.” Clearly she meant sex as the sorting hat for defining a relationship. I replied, “I have a relationship with my dog!” Bess laughed. She and I had different maps. So I am invoking “Softly, softly the tender touch,” oracle card. I hope you’re loving your loves sweetly, no matter how you define them, no matter what maps are yours, love is love.

Wednesday, November 16, 2022: This morning I pulled the Knight of Wands. I read this card as a young fearless warrior who is not constrained by cultural expectations and conventions. I see this warrior as symbolic of Gen Z, young people stepping forward to defend the rights of LGBTQ+ folks and the rights of women to body autonomy. They turned back the fascists by turning out to vote. They are the protectors and that’s the servitor card I am invoking for today.

Tuesday, November 15, 2022: The threes for me reflect the energy of the Empress: fertility, creation, and growth. It’s easy to think of manifestation as a straight path from idea to implementation — but that’s seldom the case. It’s often a spiral of opportunities opening and closing and distractions and bursts of creative energy and creativity. Sunday, November 6, 2022: This morning I pulled The Hierophant. In my opinion the Hierophant is about orthodoxy and compliance with cultural "norms". But, not all that’s considered “normal” is good or healthy. Some norms protect people and others oppress people. Many cultural norms are more for economic expediency than the benefit of the people. Just less than 200 years ago slavery was considered normal. The taboos about purity, the institution of marriage and the nuclear family may be more about providing a stable workforce and a mechanism for deciding inheritance than anything else. When looking at cultural norms the most important question may be, why is this considered “normal?” The Messenger says, “some norms are long overdue for disruption.”

Being the Witch

Saturday, November 5, 2022: My morning tarot is my opportunity to look at where I am and where I am going. It’s a meditation as well as an endeavor. I have been so busy lately and that makes it even more important. Today I pulled the Wheel. I read the wheel as not just something going around but also something that changes direction, and sometimes a spinning wheel creates. “The Wheel Weaves as the Wheel Wills.” I am invoking “The Witch” servitor card. The Witch knows their power, which  also means knowing their power's limitations. The serenity prayer, in my opinion, pretty much sums up the power of the witch. And, we can change a lot of ways and things. And, we can steer.

The Right not Easy Path

Friday, November 4, 2022: The fool is the start of a new journey and the conclusion of an old one. When I pulled the fool today I thought of how easy it is to follow old patterns and habits, even if they don’t serve you anymore.
