Evolution Revolution

“Life is what happens when you're busy making other plans.” – John Lennon

Today I pulled The Chariot. The biggest challenge for me in effecting change within and/or without is focus and making it stick. I can be in total alignment on a goal. I can be totally ready to storm the castle. But, not all problems involve castles to storm. Some problems, especially those involving ingrained habits, abusive long term relationships, addictions, compulsive behavior, bad jobs, living conditions and/or comfort zones involve a more methodical approach. It's not just change your thinking change your life. It's also change your life change your thinking.

With that in mind I am invoking The Knight of Pentacles. When I think of this knight I think of lava. It's usually easy to outrun lava, but it's really hard to stop it. The Knight of Pentacles may not win every battle but The Knight of Pentacles invariably wins the war. This knight because it does not quit. The Knight of Pentacles knows you don't lose a war until you quit.

Judgement

"Guess what? When it comes right down to it, wherever you go, there you are. Whatever you wind up doing, that’s what you’ve wound up doing. Whatever you are thinking right now, that’s what’s on your mind. Whatever has happened to you, it has already happened. The important question is, how are you going to handle it? In other words, “Now what?”"
— Jon Kabat-Zinn, Wherever You Go, There You Are: Mindfulness meditation for everyday life

Today I pulled Judgement. It seems to me my harshest critic is myself. I look back on my life with regrets. I look back on things and wonder why I did this and not that. I judge myself for many things, changes that seem important that I do not make. I envision the person I wish I was and wonder why I am not that.

I invoke the Two of Swords. I call the Two of Swords the shit or get off the pot card. The Two of Swords is conflicted and cannot step forward. In order to take off the blinders something has to be let go of. A decision must be made. Sometimes in life, I have found, making the decision is the hardest part. And, it really doesn't matter what the decision actually turns out to be.

From Chaos, Opportunity

“In the midst of chaos, there is also opportunity”
― Sun Tzu, The Art of War

The world has changed. The post cold-war era of relative peace is over. This change did not start with Putin's invasion of Ukraine. The invasion just made the change undeniable. Today I pulled the 4 of Swords. This particular 4 of Swords represents a break from strife, not the end of it. This is an opportunity to develop strategy for the ongoing global war of autocracy versus democracy. This is a war that, as the invasion demonstrates, is growing increasingly hot.
I am invoking the Tower. We have to move beyond the belief that everything is fine with the world. The Tower destroys false realities. Denial is no longer an option. The good news is, as Sun Tzu said, “in the midst of chaos, there is also opportunity.”

Strategy and Tactics

“Let your plans be dark and impenetrable as night,
and when you move,
fall like a thunderbolt.”

― Sun Tzu, The Art of War

The Emperor is all about Strategic Thinking. Simply put, strategy is a plan of action or policy designed to achieve a major or overall aim. Where do you want to be? How are you going to get there from where you are? Tactics are the individual steps and actions that will get you there.
When I pulled the The Emperor this morning I stepped back and pondered. Then, I invoked the tactical card, the King of Pentacles. It's about being focused, knowing what needs to be done and f'ing doing it!

Overwhelmed

"Flight of the seabirds
Scattered like lost words
Wield to the storm and fly"
— Robert Weir / John Barlow, Cassidy

I pulled the 10 of Wands today. Some days are so overwhelming the act of wrapping your brain around what's happening is a struggle. Ultimately, the realization sets in, that you can't. You gotta let some things go.
I am invoking Strength. Bring your spirit, your talker self and your animal self into alignment. Take a breath. Get grounded. And, turn into the storm.

Changing your own world

Camel trips do not begin or end,
they merely change form.”
— Robyn Davidson, Tracks

And, so again, I pulled The Knight of Swords. She's ready to do battle. She's a passionate warrior ready to do battle with whomever crosses her whether they deserve it or not. She's in no mood to be told what to do or what her place is. She knows what she must do. So, she sets off.

Is this the beginning or the end of her story? Is this a story about liberation from what held her back before, or is it a new quest? In response I am invoking the World. This world is the completion of the Fool's Journey. But, does the journey end, or does a journey begin?

At the end of Tracks, the book Robyn Davidson wrote about her own journey by camel across the Australian desert in 1977, Davidson concluded, "camel trips do not begin or end, they merely change form.”

The relationship

Today is finding sanctuary with someone you love (and this can be your own sweet self.) Today I pulled the Four of Wands. I read this as coming home to that person you are in emotional alignment with and having your batteries emotionally recharged.
I am invoking The Lovers. I don't use the term to be exclusive to people who are having sex. I use the term lovers to indicate people who have close/emotionally intimate relationships. This can include close friends, family, companions and other outside-of-the box relationships. I call these people my/your loves. Loves may or may not include people you are having sex with and definitely should include your own sweet self.
So, today I am seeking to be there for and with my loves and yes, I am including my own sweet self.

Your one wild and precious life

Doesn't everything die at last, and too soon?
Tell me, what is it you plan to do
with your one wild and precious life?
—Mary Oliver

The High Priestess again. She shows the path but we don't always hear her voice. So, she returns. Again we ask, "show me the path?" She says, "you cannot start from yesterday or tomorrow, must start from where you are. Here is the path. Start here now."
I invoke The Star. The first step. This star follows the Revolution of The Tower. From the tower's debris is built the new day. The Star says, "you are exactly where you need to be." So, I start stacking bricks, one at a time...

Life is a craft

Today I pulled the Three of Pentacles. Three is a holy number in many religions including Paganism. In the realm of Earth, it represents a level of achievement, craftsmanship and recognition of that skill. It doesn't matter what a person is doing, life is hard and succeeding is difficult and getting more so.
I am invoking the world in today's reading hoping my loves find success and joy in their labors.

Chasing and being a dragon

"He who fights too long against dragons becomes a dragon himself;
and if you gaze too long into the abyss, the abyss will gaze into you."
— Friedrich Nietzsche

Yesterday I pulled the Knight of Wands. Is this the one who fights the dragon? Or, is it the dragon himself? I invoked the Magician. As above so below. Being the dragon, or the dragon slayer, requires intention. And, so too, does doing nothing. So, is this the time I change my life?

— Thursday's Child, David Bowie / Reeves Gabrels

Choices

"Coincidence and fate figure largely in our lives."
— Agent Cooper, Twin Peaks

We are constantly faced with choices, everyday. Sometimes we make a good choice and have a desired outcome. Sometimes we make a bad choice and the outcome is not that good. Wouldn't it be great if that were the whole story. The truth is sometimes we make a good choice and tragedy ensues. Sometimes we make a bad choice and the outcome is lifesaving, like people who miss a plane that ends up crashing.
Today I pulled the Seven of Cups. This is a card about choices. Which one to pick? A situation I have found myself in a lot. Sometimes we come to an intersection and chose one direction or the other.
I am invoking The Wheel. The Wheel turns as The Wheel wills. It turns not just up and town, it turns right and left too.
If I turn down a road and hit a pothole and wonder what the other road was like, I tell myself, "you never see the potholes in the road untraveled." So, I continue and just keep a sharper eye out for more potholes.

Every castle falls

To Love Someone Long-Term Is to Attend a Thousand Funerals of the People They Used to Be
The people they’re too exhausted to be any longer.
The people they don’t recognize inside themselves anymore.
The people they grew out of, the people they never ended up growing into.
We so badly want the people we love to get their spark back when it burns out;
to become speedily found when they are lost.
But it is not our job to hold anyone accountable to the people they used to be.
It is our job to travel with them between each version and to honor what emerges along the way.
Sometimes it will be an even more luminescent flame.
Sometimes it will be a flicker that disappears and temporarily floods the room with a perfect and necessary darkness.
- Heidi Priebe

Today I pulled the Five of Cups and thought of what Heidi Priebe wrote.  A lot of people think of this as only applying to long-term romantic relationships. I think of this as applying to all relationships, including family, friends, pets and ourselves. For me this is not a poem about growing apart (though it can be). To me it's more a poem of accepting the nature of impermanence — this constant evolving and churning and beginning, middling and ending that is the nature of everything.
I am invoking the Tower in recognition that every castle falls. It may be it will fall in a crash and a bang or it may be that it will fall slowly, over years, one brick at a time.

You were born this way

"Don't hide yourself in regret, just love yourself, and you're set
I'm on the right track, baby, I was born this way"
— Lady Gaga, Born This Way

Continued from yesterday...
Today I pulled the Eight of Cups. This card is often seen as a card of heartbreak. But, that's not the whole picture, as I see it. This eight echoes the Strength card (the eight card in the Major Arcana) in the element of water, the element of love. It is a card of strength. Typically, in this eight, a person is walking away from love that does not work for them.
I grew up in a time when any deviation from cultural normativity — where gender, romantic or sexual minorities (GSRM) were pathologized (considered mentally ill) and/or criminalized. But, of course, that didn't stop people who were gay (for example) from being gay. Because, being queer is not a disease and it should not be a crime!
I am invoking The Messenger. We love who we love and how we love, no matter how the culture frames that. It's important in life, I have learned, to give yourself space to learn yourself and who you are so you can be happy and, if you are a GSRM, you can communicate that to others so they can have agency to make informed choices. Listen to the Messenger, be the messenger, "don't hide yourself in regret, just love yourself, and you're set."

Love, kink and connection

"Sex always wins. Sex is more powerful than you are.
Sex is 500 million years old. It built us and it will build whatever comes after us.
People like to pretend that they’re in charge of their desires or their sexuality, and they’re not.
You’re in charge of how you act on them, but you can’t dam it up.
You can’t pretend that you can stick a cork in it
without it exploding in your face one day."
— Dan Savage

We like to think we are in control of who we love, how we love and what we desire. But, really, we are not. We do control our actions. We can do what we will but we cannot will what we will.
Yesterday I pulled The Devil. This is the message of the Devil. You give the Devil her due, because, you pay her now or pay her later. You may say, The Devil made me do it; but the truth is — it's you.
I am invoking the Ace of Wands, the element of fire. Fire must be respected. Fire can burn your house down or it can keep your house warm at night.
To be continued...

Strength and Justice

Again today I drew the Eight of Wands. As I said before, to me this eight refers back to the Strength card in the Major Arcana. I read it as Strength in the element of fire. Strength is eight in the Major Arcana.
Strength needs justice to temper it. When strength is imposed without justice the result can be chaos or worse, mahem. Therefore I am invoking Justice today.

New Day, New Life

"Most people are going to have two or three marriages
or committed relationships in their adult life.
Some of us will have them with the same person."
- Esther Perel, LMFT

Yesterday I pulled the Two of Wands. This lovely card is like a portal into a new life. Transitions to a new relationship do not have to mean changing partners. New journeys can be taken as a lovely journey with your beloved existing partner(s). Thus I am invoking the Fool. Let the adventure begin!

Love squared

Yesterday was such a lovely day. I pulled the Chariot, which I have written about many times. It's a card of being in alignment and going in one direction in mind, body and soul. I chose to invoke the the 2 of Cups because this day I had plans with this amazing woman who I love so, so much.
It was an awesome day. Sweet Susie and I went to the beach in Half Moon Bay. It was almost 80 degrees and so beautiful with so many wildflowers. Spending this day with her was such a gift. I love her so much. Next week we will celebrate our amazing 29 years of couplehood.

Open: An Uncensored Memoir of Love, Liberation, and Non-Monogamy

There's a new book I am looking forward to reading. It is Open: An Uncensored Memoir of Love, Liberation, and Non-Monogamy, by Rachel Krantz.

Krantz is a journalist and one of the founding editors of Bustle, where she served as senior features editor for three years. Her work has been featured on NPR, The Guardian, Vox, Vice, and many other outlets. She's the recipient of the Robert F. Kennedy Journalism Award, the Investigative Reporters and Editors Radio Award, the Edward R. Murrow Award, and the Peabody Award for her work as an investigative reporter with YR Media. She's got cred!

I like that Open is not a book about how to do polyamory. Open is a memoir, a story about a person's journey. Like all journeys I expect there will be mistakes, missteps and wrong turns. Open is on that too short list of contemporary polyamory literature that includes work by other great writers (mostly women) like Gracie X's Wide Open and Sophie Lucido Johnson's Many Love(s). I hope more titles become available and more stories are told in the small but important genre of contemporary polyamory literature.

In my opinion, the superpower of stories is how they build on the imagination of what's possible to be. That's why the genre of contemporary polyamory literature matters so much to me. Sometimes knowing who you are is contingent on knowing what it's possible to be.

Don't forget about Love

“A generous heart is always open, always ready to receive our going and coming. In the midst of such love we need never fear abandonment. This is the most precious gift true love offers - the experience of knowing we always belong.”
― bell hooks, All About Love: New Visions

Today I pulled this King. This King is a reminder of the pleasures of having a comfortable life, a generous and tender heart, loving and helping teach others how to care for themselves. The simple joys in life. It's good to to be with and be responsible for others. We are social creatures. We need to give and receive love. I believe love is what we are here for.
In response, I am invoking The Star. The Star reminds us, I am, and you are, exactly what the universe needed to be right here, right now, as you. You and I are necessary. You are loved and needed. I am too. We belong.

Change your thinking, change your life!

Today I pulled the Eight of Wands. To me this eight refers back to the Strength card in the Major Arcana. I read it as Strength in the element of fire. Strength is eight in the Major Arcana, the Chariot is seven.
I love the positioning of these cards in my decks. For me the Chariot is about being in alignment, our mental talker selves, our animal creature selves and our spiritual selves (however you define that). Strength is about having that alignment and applying that to your life. The element of fire, Wands, for me is about manifestation.  Like Harry Potter...
I am invoking The Chariot. There's a saying core to many spiritual practices, "change your thinking, change your life!" There's a saying core to many pagan practices, "as above, so below!"
To me these mean the the same thing. We each have the power, if we choose to apply it or not, to invoke a reality that is alignment with our desired outcomes. We don't get to choose all the cards we are dealt. But, we decide how to play our hand. And, we decide whether to play our hand, or let our hand play us.
Change your thinking, change your life!

Remember to own your heart

Today I pulled the Knight of Swords. This knight is angry and she's ready to do battle. Her blood is up. She's tired of not being seen or respected and she's in a rage. She's a passionate warrior ready to do battle with whomever crosses her whether they deserve it or not.
In response I am invoking the Sun. This Sun diffuses raw enthusiasm with levity. This Sun reminds us we are in charge of how we love and live. We have have agency and choices. This Sun invites us to allow the healing and light of rebirth and joy give life to the power of our creative wisdom as we manifest an authentic future that serves us.
The Sun's rays shine light onto systems and communities and exposes darkness, ignorance and dysfunction. This Sun invites you to do the same in your life and be your authentic self.

Seeking and finding

"For if that which you seek you find not within yourself,
You will never find it without..."
— Starhawk, Charge of the Star Goddess

Today I pulled the Moon. This card always makes me think of the Charge of the Star Goddess and the quote above. We can travel the world and not get any closer to finding ourselves because we are never there. We are always here. The Moon is a deep dive into the Secret Country of Yourself. Only you can go here and, I believe, go here you must, if you are seeking answers, if you want to really know and heal yourself — you must go here and dance with your shadow. You must love and accept yourself exactly as you are and exactly where you are, here and now.
I am invoking The Three of Wands. This is the hero's journey. This is stepping out into the void and knowing you will be okay because you have the one person, the only person, you can truly count on; yourself. You have your own back.

Burn and build

Today I pulled the Knight of Wands, again. This Knight is the Knight of Revolution. He is the fire starter. Revolution is good. Fire burns and transforms. But, if you're going to burn you also have to have some idea what you are going to burn and how to rebuild. Otherwise, you're just creating scorched Earth.

Therefore, I am invoking the Teacher. This teacher is also a co-conspirator. She has learned from life and speaks her truth. She is both grounding and electrifying. She has not just learned from books, she's also looked at life with a critical eye challenging authority and culture.

She clears the floor for debate and creates libraries to aid in the path of liberation and justice. This is knowledge critical for burning and rebuilding both in society and in the self. Justice comes first, always.

Shits gotta happen, let it

Today I pulled the Tower. A lot of people don't like this card because they see it as a card of tragedy. But, it can also be a card of liberation. Castles can also be prisons where we hide from others and even from ourselves. As we spiral into what feels like end times our castles simply will not protect us. As we face problems and mega-problems, problems too large to really comprehend, like climate change, we create castles of denial and delusion. These castles don't protect us at all, they condemn us to inaction. We can't solve problems and/or mega-problems by embracing denial.
I am invoking this Two of Swords. She asks if you are in denial to the point of being self-destructive? She asks, "are you unwilling to listen to the truth? Or, are you engaged in self-preservation?"
She invites you to remove the blindfold, learn at your own pace and be gentle with yourself as you move forward, leave the castle behind, and embrace reality.

Being a social justice warrior

I will never understand how being labeled a social justice warrior (SJW) became an insult. Thinking back on my years as a labor leader and a fighter for social justice and progressive causes, I am proud of what I did and the folks I was able to help. As somebody who grew up in the second half of the 20th Century, evolving from a time when being gay evolved from being considered a mental illness to embracing same sex marriage, I also resonate with woke. As in, we woke up to embracing folks and loving folks (and ourselves) as they (we) really are. We embraced sex positivity and coming out of the closet.
Today I pulled the Knight of Wands. This is the fire starter. As the forces of darkness, racism, bigotry, intolerance and hate try to put out the fire and shove folks back into the closet we need our social justice warriors more than ever, we need to be fire starters.
I am invoking Justice! Taking it to the streets. Fight hate, racism, book banning and intolerance. Be anti-fascist, be loud and be proud, be political, be a social justice warrior and be a fire starter.

Strength and Bending

The journey continues. Again, today I pulled Strength. Yesterday I spoke about vertical and horizontal strength. These are being strong by being in alignment in spirit, mind and body and also being strong by knowing, living and speaking the true essence of who you are, your truth of how you love and find joy. But, there's other measurements of strength too.
Sometimes strength comes from compromise. Having been a single parent and sole provider for three children I had to leave them five days a week to provide for them and for myself. A warrior knows how to balance such things because success requires balancing conflicting needs. Sometimes we have to navigate hostile working conditions, awful commutes, less than ideal living conditions, leaving our children alone or in the care of others and many other things in order to survive.
Sometime we have to bend. Therefore I am invoking this King of Pentacles. She asks you to forgive yourself for the journey you are on. She asks you to see this part of your journey as an era that your inner warrior has to navigate to get to the seat of awareness to connect to your full potential and be responsible.
